Yves LÉVEILLÉ – composer-pianist

A musician who combines tradition and experimentation in a work that is poetic and intimately human

Over the past twenty years, composer/pianist Yves Léveillé has established himself as a key figure on the Quebec jazz scene. Drawing on both
contemporary and traditional jazz, classical music and world music, the composer’s aesthetic is distinguished by a refined, melodic harmonic sound
that appeals to a wide audience. He ingeniously combines tradition and experimentation, forging a work that is poetic and intimately human.

The musician has recorded nine albums on the Effendi label and one on Atma-Classique with Trio En Trois Couleurs, all of which have met with
enthusiastic acclaim. His latest album l’Échelle du temps for string quintet and piano was awarded the Prix Opus & «Creation of the Year»; at the gala on February 5, 2023.

He has received several grants (CALQ/Banff Center and New York State) for creative residencies; twice in New York at the Studio du Québec and
once at the Banff Art Center (2004, 2007, 2012).

In September 2018, he received the André Gagnon Award for instrumental music from the SPACQ Foundation.

He has performed extensively in New York, Europe and China.

He is general and artistic director of Productions Yves Léveillé, an organization dedicated to the production and dissemination of contemporary jazz concerts. Les Bourdonnements jazz at l’Outremont, produced in conjunction with the theater, is a prime example of this, and the series is now in its
seventh season.

Since 2018, the pianist has been a lecturer at UQAM’s music department.
