An exceptional artist, he successfully combines his career as a sensitive, generous actor with that of an accomplished writer
- A man of sharing, he has been teaching creative writing and dramatic interpretation for many years.
- He acts as a consultant and mentor to authors of all genres. His literary columns, lectures and appearances on numerous radio programs, most recently Radio-Canada’s «Réfléchir», are much appreciated by all those who have the chance to read and hear him.
- Drawing on over 30 years’ experience as a trainer, he and ACM have developed progressive writing workshops, from idea to manuscript, which focus on the writing process as applied to each individual’s work and style. Several participants in these workshops have gone on to publish. All emphasize the master’s generosity, attentiveness and professionalism, as well as the fact that his approach is unlike anything else in the field.
- Regularly nominated for his literary works, this prolific author has published novels, short stories, poetry and notebooks that have won him a wide readership and numerous awards since his debut.
- His first novel, La Belle Épouvante (1981), won the Prix Robert-Cliche, and Le Dernier Été des Indiens (Seuil, 1982) won the Prix Jean-Macé. Le Petit Aigle à tête blanche (1994), his biggest critical and public success, won the Governor General’s Award and the Prix Jean-Hamelin the following year. Since the award’s inception in 2012, he has been a member of the Prix Hervé-Foulon jury. “Tu me rappelles un souffle”, a correspondence with Jonathan Harnois.
- The Quebec government has just awarded him the Prix Athanase David, Quebec’s most important recognition of a writer’s career as a whole, his importance to the Quebec people and his international influence. His latest book, On est de son enfance, has just been published and is already being reprinted.
- Several of his books have been translated into English, Italian and Spanish.
- He has also written and participated in several literary plays, the latest of which, produced by Le Fil Un petit trottoir au-dessus de l’abîme, was presented 2 nights at the Outremont and one night at the Théâtre du Lac Brome. Monsieur Bovary, the best-known, was directed by Lorraine Pintal and presented at the TNM and the Trident. It has also been published as a book. And most recently, Jack Kerouac’s Cosse-tu penses mon p’tit bonhomme, which has been a hit with audiences everywhere it’s been performed.
- His reputation as an actor is equally enviable.
- He is well known to television, film and theater audiences, having played leading roles in over 100 plays, dozens of television programs and numerous films.
- Celebrated as an actor, he has appeared in over a hundred plays, including several landmark creations – Les oranges sont vertes by C Gauvreau, Le Syndrome de Cézanne by N Canac-Marquis, Best Actor Award, Quinzaine internationale de théâtre, Les Feluettes by M-M Bouchard, Masque du meilleur comédien, Académie québécoise du Théâtre.
- In cinema and television, he has played a wide variety of strong character roles in over fifty productions, including Au secours de Béatrice, for which he received a Gémeaux nomination, and in several feature films.
- A film was also made of C’est le cœur qui meurt en dernier.
